Rivers of Oz - Part 1 - The Hamilton Jet Cape York Expedition

Inspired by the pioneering feats of Sir Edmund Hillary and Jon Hamilton fifty years ago, Duncan Storrier again leads a group of jet boat enthusiasts to explore rivers a little closer to home this time in the first of a two part series in Australia.

Rivers of Oz - the Hamilton Jet Cape York Expedition explores the crocodile infested waters of North Queensland including the river famous for white water rafting – the Tully. They ply the Russell, the Mulgrave and the Herbert, rivers that weave from the tropical coastline, high into the foothills of the surrounding ranges, their shallow sandy bottoms morphing, first into coarse shingle and finally large rocks that lurk perilously below the surface.

Even the trek north by road to The Tip is an adventure – hundreds of kilometres of red dust and dirt etching its way into any and everywhere it can on the four Hamilton 141s and trailers. It was partially washed away in the crystal clear waters of the Jardine, a river stretching almost from one coast to the other. They would make the impressive tourist icon of Fruit Bat Falls on Elliot Creek, but not the way they expected.

Boats were battered and trailers trashed… but it didn’t end there. World Jet Boat Expeditions would return to Australia for part two of Rivers of Oz… to be continued.
