In 1959 Bruce McLaren won the inaugural Waimate 50 event, a race around the streets of the small South Canterbury township. In 2010 a group of motorsport enthusiasts revived the event combining a fantastic gravel hill climb to the White Horse lookout, a gravel rally sprint and Street Sprint. the best of both gravel and tarmac. Over 100 cars assmebled for the Running of the Waimate 50 GT Series from single seaters to V8 Sedans... Ron Silvester's Chev Coupe even turned up in the hands of son Grant. |
